Entered on the Stationers' register 2 May, 1608, as by "Wylliam Shakespere," and published in the same year under his name. There is no sufficient reason for ascribing the play to him. Cf. Camb. hist. Eng. lit., etc.
Original t.p. reads: A Yorkshire tragedy, not so new as lamentable and true. Acted by his Majesties players at the Globe. Written by W. Shakspeare. At London, Printed by R.B. for Thomas Pauier and are to bee sold at his shop on Cornhill, neere to the exchange, 1608.
