Descriptive Notes

The subscription sheet, later used as a title sheet as in copy at Maps 1.TAB.26., is dated December 1754. The engravings are likely to date from 1754-5 and to have been available by private subscription. They were reissued by Boydell in 1772. On the evidence of surviving compositional studies it may be deduced that Paul Sandby was responsible for the figures, and Thomas for the panorama landscapes. See Bruce Robertson, The Art of Paul Sandby, Yale Center for British Art, 1985, no. 71.
